U Offers New Online Master’s Program for Infrastructure Professionals

The University of Minnesota’s Technological Leadership Institute (TLI) will offer its newly restructured Master of Science in Infrastructure Systems Management and Engineering (ISME) program beginning in fall 2013. The ISME is a hybrid online and in-person program that builds a foundation of leadership and management expertise to complement a systems view of infrastructure technologies.

The ISME program was adapted from TLI’s previous program, the Master of Science in Infrastructure Systems Engineering, to better meet the needs of working infrastructure professionals by incorporating more management-oriented classes, and offering the knowledge and technologies to deliver and manage secure and sustainable civil infrastructures.

To better suit students’ and employers’ need for flexibility, the ISME program will be offered primarily online. Several in-person sessions are scheduled throughout the two-year program -- orientation, four residencies, and the final Capstone presentation -- to strengthen the online learning experience as students connect face-to-face with their peers.

The ISME program is designed for civil engineers, city planners, and other infrastructure professionals who have a bachelor’s degree and at least one year of relevant work experience, and are seeking to advance their career and expertise. Courses in the program are taught by university faculty members and industry leaders. Many students are sponsored by their employers for advanced training and knowledge that can be directly applied to their business.

Similar to its predecessor, the ISME program will culminate with a Capstone, an intensive project of each student’s choosing. The Capstone project has a practical, real-world impact on their company or community, and is a direct benefit to employers who send their employees through the program.

The ISME program will be offered starting in fall 2013, with an application deadline of July 15, 2013. For more information, visit isme.umn.edu.
