Happy summer Minnesota Chapter APWA! 

As they say in Minnesota, there are two seasons – Winter and Road Construction. As public works professionals, we play a huge role in both seasons by keeping our roads safe to drive on during winter months, and by leading public works construction and maintenance projects during the summer. As we move into Minnesota’s other season, summer road construction, I continue to be reminded what an incredible honor it is to serve as President of the Minnesota Chapter of the American Public Works Association. Public works professionals across our state make an extraordinary impact every day by designing, building, operating, and maintaining the infrastructure systems that support our communities and improve our quality of life. I am grateful for the opportunity to work alongside such a dedicated and passionate membership.

During our recent 2026 Spring Conference, the Chapter officially unveiled its updated 2026–2029 Strategic Plan, which will help guide our priorities, strengthen member value, and continue advancing the public works profession across our state.

This plan is rooted in our mission: to support those who design, improve, operate, and maintain public works and infrastructure through advocacy, education, and membership engagement. It is also guided by our vision: advancing quality of life for all Minnesotans. 

Our Strategic Plan aligns with and builds upon the National APWA framework through the three pillars of People, Purpose, and Presence. People is about creating a welcoming and engaging member experience. Purpose focuses on excellence in workforce development, education, and professional growth. Presence emphasizes promoting the value of public works to leaders, communities, and the public while strengthening awareness of our profession.

Over the next four years, our goals include enhancing the member experience, expanding education and workforce opportunities, and increasing our visibility through advocacy, communications, and outreach.

Chapter committees are working to update their goals and work plans to align with the updated strategic plan. I am excited to see the energy and ideas our committees bring forward as we continue strengthening our Chapter and advancing the public works profession.

Summer brings one of our Chapter’s favorite traditions—the annual Summer Golf Classic at Bunker Hills Golf Course in the beautiful City of Coon Rapids. Bunker Hills Golf Course is owned and operated by the City of Coon Rapids, and as an employee of this City, it is my honor to welcome the Chapter to visit the City of Coon Rapids for this great event. The golf classic is always a fantastic opportunity to connect with fellow public works professionals while enjoying a great day outdoors.

As Chapter President, I have had the opportunity this year to engage with many of our committees and offer support to the incredible volunteers who help drive the Chapter forward. Our Chapter’s success depends on members who are willing to step forward and get involved.

I encourage every member to consider volunteering within the Chapter. Whether you have time to serve on a committee long-term, assist with a short-term initiative, help at an event, or mentor emerging professionals, there are many meaningful ways to contribute. Getting the most out of your membership experience means getting involved and building connections with others in the profession. The 2026 PWX in Houston Texas is coming up and will take place between August 30 and September 2. PWX continues to provide outstanding professional development, networking opportunities, and exposure to the latest innovations in public works. Chapter members planning to attend PWX are encouraged to sign up for the Minnesota Chapter Dinner, which will be held this year at the House of Blues in Houston. It’s a short walking distance from the convention center. A special thank you to April Crockett, our Chapter Vice-President, for coordinating this event. 

Exciting long-term planning efforts are beginning as the Minnesota Chapter prepares to host the 2028 PWX in Minneapolis. Hosting PWX is a tremendous opportunity to showcase Minnesota, our public works community, and the outstanding professionals who serve throughout our state. As planning efforts ramp up over the next two years, there will be many opportunities for members to become involved through PWX Host Committees and event support activities.
