The 2026 APWA North American Snow Conference provided excellent opportunities for public works professionals, operations leaders, and industry partners to exchange ideas and explore emerging practices in winter maintenance and snow operations. The conference reinforced the importance of innovation, workforce development, safety, and data-driven decision-making in maintaining effective and resilient winter operations programs to any climate that you are involved with.
One of the strongest themes throughout the conference was the growing role of technology in snow and ice management. Agencies across North America shared how they are using route optimization software, GPS tracking, weather intelligence systems, and real-time equipment monitoring to improve operational efficiency and reduce response times. Presenters demonstrated how data collection and performance analytics can help departments better allocate resources, justify budgets, and improve service levels for their communities.
Another major focus was workforce recruitment and retention. Many organizations discussed the ongoing challenges of attracting and retaining qualified operators and maintenance staff. Sessions highlighted the importance of employee engagement, training programs, mentorship opportunities, and modernizing workplace culture to support long-term workforce sustainability. Several agencies emphasized the value of cross-training employees and investing in leadership development to strengthen organizational resilience.
The conference also highlighted advancements in sustainable winter maintenance practices. Many sessions focused on reducing environmental impacts through improved salt management strategies, liquid deicing applications, calibrated equipment, and the use of alternative materials. Agencies demonstrated how responsible material usage can reduce costs while still maintaining safe roadways.
A valuable takeaway from the event was the importance of collaboration and peer networking. The conference created opportunities for attendees to learn directly from neighboring agencies, industry experts, and vendors facing similar operational challenges. Sharing experiences, successes, and lessons learned provided practical insights that can be adapted and implemented within local operations.
Overall, the 2026 APWA North American Snow Conference reinforced the importance of continuous improvement, adaptability, and innovation in public works winter operations. The knowledge gained from educational sessions, networking opportunities, and industry demonstrations provided valuable insights that can support enhanced service delivery, improved safety outcomes, and more efficient snow and ice management practices moving forward. This is definitely a educational and trade show worth going to if you are a local operator close to the host city. Furthermore, if you are in operations or higher level management in snow operations it is an awesome experience that gives you plenty of knowledge. I look forward to going annually now to the event!
