President's Message

I am so grateful for the opportunity to serve as the 2023 APWA-MN Chapter President. I am looking forward to working with all of you to support the mission of APWA, which is to “Support those who operate, improve and maintain public works and infrastructure through advocacy, education and member engagement.”

On the advocacy front, the Minnesota Infrastructure Alliance (formerly MN 2050) has combined its efforts with Raise our Grade to create a coalition of professional organizations striving to provide and maintain safe and sustainable infrastructure across Minnesota by increasing awareness of infrastructure through a coordinated voice. Our Public Awareness Committee continues to be active in our communities at events such as the Creativity Festival, CreativeCon, STEMLink and STEM Day at the Minnesota State Fair. Watch for emails from the Chapter about ways you can get involved in Minnesota Infrastructure Alliance or Public Awareness Committee events in the future – we need volunteers beyond the committee members for many of these opportunities to advocate for Public Works!

Enrollment in our education offerings remains strong. Our 2022 Spring and Fall Conferences saw record attendance, and annual program offerings such as the Underground Utility Construction Inspector School (UUCIS), Public Works Certificate Program, Human Resource Essentials for Public Works Professionals and Public Works Executive Fellowship Program are all underway (in-person!) again this year.

We have been very fortunate as a Chapter to continue to see our membership numbers grow.  We must now work hard to ensure our members stay engaged. My ask in 2023 is for each of us to think of ways we can encourage and support each other to become OR remain active in the Chapter. Like many of you, I was encouraged to first become a member of APWA-MN and was then invited by other APWA-MN members to get more involved by serving on a committee. Committees are a great way to become more involved, as are volunteer events and technical tours. If you’re already active in the Chapter, consider inviting someone that is not yet active along with you to an APWA-MN event. If you are looking to get more involved, feel free to reach out to me or one of our committee members for more information. Any of us would be willing to share with you examples of how we get so much more back from the Chapter than we actually put into it.

Be Well!
