Emerging Leaders Academy Recap

Article submitted by Sarah Schweiger, APWA-MN Chapter’s 2022 ELA Recipient

It has been an extraordinary experience to be a graduate of the Emerging Leaders Academy Class of 2022 (ELA XV). The program has been incredibly rewarding, both personally and professionally. Beyond the leadership and management skills I gained, I am confident I have made life-long connections and friends through my classmates from across the US and Canada. I am so grateful to the APWA-MN Chapter for sponsoring my participation in the program and to APWA National for this invaluable opportunity.

The Emerging Leaders Academy (ELA) is a year-long national program lead by APWA. The program provides in-depth leadership and management training through a public works lens. Running from September through August, the program includes monthly virtual meetings and homework assignments, as well as completion of a group project. The class kicks off with a two-day retreat in Kansas City at the APWA national headquarters office, and concludes at PWX, this year held in Charlotte, NC.

ELA currently accepts 16 participants each year but will be expanding to 32 participants in 2023. Find more information about the Emerging Leaders Academy on the APWA website. I would highly recommend this program to any emerging leader who is looking to build their leadership skills in the field of public works while building a network of peers and learning more about APWA at the national level.
