President's Message

Welcome to summer! It sure came on strong and I could not be happier. This summer will not be one where the lake is too cold for swimming until the 4th of July! The Minnesota Chapter is turning it up also as we plan for several upcoming events and initiatives. Our annual sponsorship campaign is underway. More than ever, we are thankful for the support and value our sponsors bring to this amazing organization. The Chapter’s two main sources of revenue are sponsorships and conferences. The pandemic limited our ability to raise funds via conference registrations. We simply would not be able to continue our work without our sponsors. Our sincere gratitude goes out to each and every sponsor who has stood by us over the past year! We hope you continue to see the value of our offerings and support us again this year. We are aware that the pandemic has also restricted our networking and educational offerings recently, and we are working hard to make up for it in 2021-2022. Our annual scholarship golf outing has moved back to the heart of summer and is set for Thursday, July 15th at Bunker Hills golf course in Coon Rapids. Post-golf dinner and awards are back, and event coordinators have guaranteed nice weather, so dust off those clubs and find your foursome. Register HERE

Fundraising has been a big topic for the Executive Committee recently as we strive to maintain historic levels for scholarships and introduce new initiatives that are outside the Chapter's operating budget. MN2050 is currently exploring joint fundraising opportunities with the Minnesota Chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE). We have also been discussing new ways to partner with the Science Museum of Minnesota, including creating permanent public works-focused exhibits both inside and outside the museum. If you have a knack for fundraising and would like to help with this effort, please contact Russ Matthys.

Are you registered for PWX yet? This year’s event is called Stronger Together and will be taking place in St. Louis, Missouri August 29th through September 1st. Sign up HERE before July 9th for $100 off registration. Check out the special events the St. Louis crew has planned including golf, a microbrewery tour, and a 5K Fun Run/Walk (https://pwx.apwa.net/PWX/Event_Details.aspx?EventTabs=9#EventTabs). We would love to see all of you there! And don’t forget to sign up for the Minnesota Chapter dinner on Tuesday, August 31, at Three Sixty, located atop the Hilton St. Louis at the Ballpark (https://www.360-stl.com/).

Stay tuned for additional events this summer and fall, including:

  • Technical tours of Southwest Light Rail Transit construction and the new City of Blaine Water Treatment Plant
  • Young Professionals Annual Mini Golf event in mid-July and joint networking event (kickball!) with NCITE Young Members Committee on Wednesday, August 18th
  • A picnic/yard game get together similar to the one held during the Spring Conference
  • STEM Day at the State Fair on Thursday, August 26th

Stay cool!
