Get to Know the New APWA-MN Board Members

Members elected three new APWA-MN Board members during the 2020 Fall elections. Learn a little more about the new members, their involvement in the chapter, and other professional and personal details.

Monica Heil - Secretary/Treasurer

Employed by: WSB
Past employment: City of Lakeville
Years active in APWA-MN: 9 years
Activities in APWA-MN (past and current): APWA-MN Executive Committee Director-Consultant (2018-2019); Education & Training Committee Chair (2014-present); APWA-MN Chapter UUCIS Subcommittee Chair (2012-2019); 2016 PWX Technical Tour Planning Committee.
Other professional accomplishments/awards/recognitions, etc.: I am currently serving as the Vice President of Municipal Services at WSB. In 2015, I received the APWA-MN Young Professional stipend to attend my first PWX in Phoenix, Arizona. In 2020, I was named a "Rising Star" by the Zweig Group, one of the AEC industry's leading research, publishing and advisory service resources.
Family: I have been married to my husband, Chris, for 16 years and we have three daughters ages 13, 11 and 10.
Hobbies/Extra-curricular activities: I love traveling with my family.

Zach Johnson- Director-Manager/Engineer

Activities in APWA-MN (past and current): Government Affairs Committee Chair; member of the Education & Training Committee (also past member of UUCIS subcommittee); a member of the Raise Our Grade MN initiative; 2016 PWX Publicity Committee member; and a graduate of the APWA-MN Chapter Leadership Academy.
Other professional accomplishments/awards/recognitions, etc.: Alternate, Minnesota State Aid Municipal Screening Board (Metro East District); member, City Engineers Association of Minnesota (CEAM); and member, Legislative Committee, City Engineers Association of Minnesota (CEAM)
Family: Married to Tammy for 18 years and have two boys, Trevor (age 16) and Derek (age 8).
Hobbies/Extra-curricular activities: Family road trips; weekends at the cabin; outdoor activities (hiking, boating, 4-wheeling); running, cooking, coaching, ping pong, and golfing; whiskey, coffee and wine enthusiast; family board games and card games.
Is there something about you that we would find surprising? In 6th grade, I won one year of free Dairy Queen blizzards for guessing the number of M&M candies in a jar at the Eagan FoodFare. My answer of 23,183 was 16 short of the actual total.

Mike Purdy - Director-Vendor/Contractor

Activities in APWA-MN (past and current): Current member of the Education & Training Committee, regular exhibitor of the APWA-MN Chapter Fall Conference, a regular sponsor of the APWA-MN Chapter summer golf event
Other professional accomplishments/awards/recognition, etc.: A member of the Oshkosh Corporation Dealer Council, MacQueen Equipment Senior Leadership Team Member, and a member of the Federal Signal Dealsershp Council
Family: Married to Jen Purdy and have two sons; Michael Purdy III (MP3), age 5; and Wyatt Purdy, age 2. Jen works part-time at MacQueen as a Sales Trainer
Hobbies/Extra-curricular activities: Co-founder of "Operation Scholar," a non-profit designed to supply scholarships and grants to underprivileged youth. Sports enthusiast. St. John's University, MN College Basketball member 2001-2003 - OK, I rode the bench but I was on the team!
Is there something about you that we would find surprising? I have traveled to over 20 countries. Studied in Perth, Australia and bungee jumped from second-highest spot in the world (Queensland, New Zealand).

Deb Williams - Director-Superintendent

Activities in APWA-MN (past and current): Education & Traning Committee member, a speaker at the national conference, a regular attendee at the chapter's fall and spring conferences, an attendee of APWA PWX, volunteer for the chapter's Adopt-a-Highway program and Feed My Starving Children events
Other professional accomplishments/awards/recognition, etc.: Women in Public Leadership - Hamline University Committee Recognition; Public Administration Scholar Award - Hamline University
Family: I have three grown children and spouses, as well as the lucky grandparent of 6 grandchildren who keep me thoroughly entertained.
Hobbies/Extra-curricular activities: Vegetable gardening, cooking, reading, wood-working and outdoor sports.
