Changes at APWA National

By Angela Popenhagen, APWA-MN Delegate

After serving as APWA executive director for more than 16 years, Peter King recently submitted his resignation, effective July 20.

The APWA Board of Directors has decided to proceed as follows:

The Board authorized entering into a six-month contract with Larry Frevert to serve as the association’s interim executive director. Larry is a former APWA president. Members of the Minnesota chapter may know him best for his participation in the MN2050 videos, as well as his attendance at our Spring Conference several years ago. Larry has always held the Minnesota chapter in high regard.

He lives in Kansas City, which will provide convenient access to headquarters. He has committed to devote all of his efforts to APWA with the exception of his involvement with the Kansas City Metro Chapter’s Public Works Institute. The entire Board has a great deal of confidence in Larry and is pleased he is willing to serve the association.

Secondly, the Board appointed a six-member search committee, consisting of the current executive committee; Ron Calkins, who is the nominee for president-elect; and two, at large members. Their first task is the selection of a search firm, which should be finalized in the next few weeks. They will also be responsible for selecting 3-4 finalists for the entire Board to interview. The entire process is expected to take 6-8 months and I will keep you apprised as the process moves forward.
