With the assistance of the Saint Paul Port Authority, the Membership and Special Events Committee coordinated two recent technical tours.

In December, George Hoene, Senior Development Project Manager with the Port, led about a dozen Minnesota Chapter members on a tour of the recently overhauled Macy’s Department Store in Downtown Saint Paul. The five-story building sat vacant since 2013 and is now thriving with a diverse variety of new destinations including Tim Horton’s, Walgreen’s, TRIA Orthopaedic, and Stacked Deck Brewing to name a few. The facility also houses the Minnesota Wild Practice Facility and Hamline University’s Men’s and Women’s Hockey programs utilizing TRIA rink on the building’s top floor which seats up to 1,200 spectators.

On a cold Thursday in mid-January, Mike Solfelt of Mortenson Construction led a ‘sold-out’ tour of Saint Paul’s Allianz Field Stadium, home to the Minnesota United major league soccer team. The group of about 30 learned of the innovative stormwater treatment and re-use system as well as the stadium ‘skin’, a polymer-coated woven fiberglass mesh used for the first time. The material was fabricated in Shanghai, folded origami-style, and shipped to the stadium site in large panels where custom directions were followed to unfold and install it on the structural-steel skeleton. Construction of the stadium is substantially complete with the season kicking off on April 13. Even if you’re not a futbol fan, it’s a beautiful stadium and soccer season lines up well with great Minnesota weather. Did I mention the onsite restaurant will feature 96 different tap beers?
