APWA-MN - UMN Student Chapter Update
By Joe Dunlap, APWA-MN Student Chapter Vice President

The semester is busy as always at the U, and it is already more than halfway done! The Student Chapter officers have put on three events and have tabled at two student club fairs this semester. The first event this fall was a casual welcome to the semester event where officers talked to students about APWA over coffee in the student lounge of the civil engineering building. On October 18, the club hosted a networking event at Applebee’s in the Graduate Hotel on campus. Students enjoyed meeting and exchanging with professionals from the public and private sector. Student turnout for the event was great. Student officers hope for a larger turnout of professionals at future networking events as the professional presence was thinner than past events. The student officers want to thank the professionals who attended the networking event and seek feedback on how to make networking events more appealing for professionals in the future. Please send thoughts and ideas regarding networking events to apwa@umn.edu; your feedback is greatly appreciated!

The most recent event the Student Chapter hosted was a tour of the Mississippi Watershed Management Organization (MWMO). At MWMO, students received training in basic stormwater management practices. Students also had fun touring MWMO’s stormwater park, which houses green infrastructure including a 4,000-gallon rainwater collection cistern, a tree trench water conveyance and infiltration system, a gravel-bed tree nursery, rain gardens, and a filter media test lab.

Up next, student officers are planning a lunch and learn event on campus later this semester. GO Gophers!

Best Regards,
UMN Student Officers
