Diversity Committee Update

May 21, 2016

The APWA-MN Diversity Committee was formed in 2012 with goals to retain, recruit and encourage a diverse population in the field of Public Works. We work with other APWA-MN committees to promote the importance of diversity within our industry.

Recent efforts of the committee have focused on connecting with Minneapolis Public Schools (MPS). Thanks to all who volunteered at the MPS STEM Expo on February 3! The event was held at the Minneapolis Convention Center and several hundred 8th grade students from MPS attended the event. Students who stopped by the APWA-MN booth got a chance to check out survey equipment, a traffic signal, and the cross section of a toilet.

Within the next few months, a flyer will be distributed to the membership outlining partnership opportunities with the Department of College and Career Readiness at MPS, such as:

Project Lead the Way ‑ a national program promoting pre-engineering courses for high school students.

STEP-UP Achieve ‑ a program for Minneapolis youth, ages 16 to 21, to obtain paid internships with local employers.

Jobs for America’s Graduates ‑ a national program that assists students who face considerable life challenges and are at risk of dropping out of school.
