Get to Know the New APWA-MN Board Members

Members recognized its newly elected APWA-MN Board during the 2018 Fall Conference. Learn a little more about the new members, their involvement in the chapter, and other professional and personal details.

Beth Engum - Secretary/Treasurer

Past employment: Ramsey County
Years active in APWA-MN: 13 years
Activities in APWA-MN (past and current): Volunteer Coordinator since 2012; Membership/Special Events Committee member since 2012; Director-State/Regional/County on Executive Committee 2014-2015
Family: My husband, Nate, and I have been married for 19 years. We have a 13-year-old daughter, Elana, and a 10-year-old son, Owen
Hobbies/Extra-curricular activities: Reading books, running, traveling, watching sports, being outside
Is there something about you that we would find surprising? (e.g., are you a pilot, do you volunteer as a clown, are you a master gardener?): I've run 4 marathons and lived in Virginia for 6 years after graduating from the University of Minnesota
 

Jupe Hale - Director-Manager/Engineer

Years active in APWA-MN Chapter: 14 

Activities in APWA-MN (past and current): Member of Chapter Conference Planning Committee for 14 years (standing chair for past 7 years); Co-chair of 2016 PWX Hospitality Committee; attended APWA Congress/PWX for 14 consecutive years
Other professional accomplishments/awards/recognition, etc.: President - American Society of Civil Engineers, Phoenix Chapter; Registered Professional Engineer (1997 - Arizona, 2002 - Minnesota)
Family: Married for 21.5 years
Hobbies/Extra-curricular activities:  Golf, youth/prep sports viewing and coaching, microbreweries/brew pubs
Is there something about you that we would find surprising?  I was an Adjunct Lecturer in the U of Minnesota Construction Management degree program for 13 years. Also, I have five free-fall solo parachute jumps (earned my Air Force Jump Wings).
 

Mark Rehder - Director-Vendor/Contractor

Activities in APWA-MN (past and current): Member of the Environment & Sustainability Committee, Adopt-a-Highway cleanup participant, Vendor at multiple APWA events, and PWX attendee 
Other professional accomplishments/awards/recognition, etc.: Board-certified Master Arborist, presented on oak wilt control at Michigan Arbor Con event in 2015, contracted City Forester for the City of North Oaks
Family: Wife, Paula, a family physician at Fairview Lakes; two children - Charles, studying Computer Science as a sophomore at University of Illinois-Champaign; Lydia, senior at Chisago Lakes High School, planning to attend Carthage College in Kenosha, WI
Hobbies/Extra-curricular activities: Currently, focusing on my new business but also enjoy skating outdoors, golf and playing with my dogs
Is there something about you that we would find surprising?  I am studying to become scuba-certified even though I am scared of deep water
