APWA-MN Members Attend Crashed Ice Technical Tour
By Eric Seaburg, City of Golden Valley

On Thursday January 22, a group of thrill-seeking and awe-inspired public works professionals braved the cold to attend the APWA-MN Crashed Ice Technical Tour for a first-hand look at the Red Bull Crashed Ice World Championships at the Cathedral in St. Paul. This spectacular event included hockey-pad equipped racers flying down a 1,500-foot ice cross downhill racing track that featured a 131-foot vertical drop over the length of the track.

Attendees of the technical tour were able to watch a number of contestants navigate the track during their three practice runs that Thursday. Needless to say, navigating the track for the first time resulted in many highly entertaining “mishaps” for us to see. Thankfully, no participants were injured while we were watching!

In addition to the exciting practice runs, attendees were able to listen to Matt Morreim with the City of St. Paul and  other Redbull Crashed Ice organizers talk about what it takes to make an event as unordinary as this work. The open lines of inter-departmental  communication at the City of St. Paul and the great working relationship between the city and event organizers are just a few of the many things that ensure a successful event.

It was a fun event and we thank the City of St. Paul and Red Bull Crashed Ice for taking the time to give us a behind-the-scenes look!
