Chapter Involvement is Invaluable to Career Success

December 8, 2014

By Chris Petree, City of Lakeville

I’m writing this article just following our Chapter’s Fall Workshop & Conference. I was lucky enough to find out a couple of weeks ago that I was elected the next Secretary/Treasurer of our chapter and was sworn in at the conference. I am extremely humbled by the opportunity.

It’s hard to believe that nearly 20 years ago I was in college and looking for some direction on what I wanted to do with my life. Then I was hired by the City of Apple Valley as a utilities maintenance worker and the rest is history.

I decided at that point I would make the most of the opportunity and 20 years and a few cities later, I’ve come to love the public works profession. The opportunities that I’ve been afforded over my career are due in large part to our APWA-Minnesota Chapter and the great people in this industry.

I became involved in the APWA-Minnesota Chapter over 15 years ago. The professional and personal relationships that I haveformed as a result of this involvement have proved to be invaluable to my career success. I challenge our members to become more involved, and believe you will be pleasantly surprised at the benefits you will receive from actively participating in this great organization.

I wish everyone a healthy and happy holidays and looking forward to seeing all of you in 2015!
