Chapter Provides Myriad of Education, Training Opportunities

By Chris Petree, Education & Training Committee

It’s been another busy year for the Education & Training Committee. Committee members worked hard on continuing to provide exceptional education and training opportunities to APWA-MN Chapter members.

Successful ongoing programs include the Public Works Certificate program, the Leadership Academy, the Underground Utilities Construction Inspector School (UUCIS), the Fall Workshop, the Public Works Writing Workshop, and partnerships with other agencies/associations on many other training opportunities.

The committee also awarded a number of scholarships during the past year.

Over the past year, the Public Works Certificate Program averaged nearly 30 students in each of the four core classes. During the 2014-15 school year, the program will undergo some significant changes with the most notable being the addition of a fifth core course titled, Office and Professional Skills for Public Works.

The Leadership Academy continues to be a very strong program, with 17 students graduating in May and recognized at the Spring Conference.

The UUCIS had another outstanding year with 46 total participants from Richfield and remote sites in Rochester and Sioux Falls.

At the Fall Workshop, we featured two programs. The first was the APWA Winter Maintenance Supervisor Certificate with 113 attendees. The second was the Public Works Writing Workshop with 46 attendees. The Education & Training Committee was very pleased with the level of participation at these events.

The committee also partners with other agencies and associations to provide several successful education and training initiatives, including the Water Utility Management Institute, DCTC Civil Engineering Technology Program, Hennepin Technical Public Works Technician Program, and the LTAP Roadway Maintenance Training & Demo Day.
