Virtual MN Future City Competition - Judging Opportunities
Minnesota Future City Competition (FCC) will take place this year 100% virtually. The theme of the 2020-2021 competition is Building a City on the Moon. There are three opportunities for judging this year, detailed below. Thank you for considering volunteering your time as a judge.
2020-2021 Minnesota Future City Competition Virtual Judging Opportunities
- City Essay Judge – same commitment as in prior years. Judges read 4-5 different essays and fill out scoresheets. Each essay is a maximum of 1,500 words. The students will share their vision of their future city and describe their solution to the lunar city challenge. Judging period: 11/23/2020 to 1/05/2021. Time commitment: 3-4 hours. More about the City Essay.
- City Model Slideshow Judge – New this year! Judges will review 4-5 different slideshows (25 slides max.) and fill out scoresheets. Because there is not an in-person competition, students will create slideshows showcasing their city model. To accommodate both in-person and virtual learning environments, team members are allowed to build one model or individual sections. The model must be build to scale, include a moving part, and not exceed the $100 expense budget for materials. The focus is still on using recycled materials. Judging period: 12/15/2020 to 1/18/2021. Time commitment: 3-4 hours. More about the City Model Slideshow.
- City Presentation + Live Q&A – New this year! Judges will view a 7-minute recorded team presentation, then meet the team live on Zoom for a 10-minute Q & A session, then fill out a scoresheet. Ideally, judging takes place during school day hours, but depending on the availability of judges, early evening and/or Saturday judging slots will be added. The logistics of this judging opportunity are still a work in progress. Signing up indicates your interest, but I understand if the timing does not work out once more details are available. Judging period: 1/15/2021 to 2/18/2021. Time commitment: 1-4 hours, depending on the number of teams you are able to judge. More about the City Presentation and Live Q&A.
